How to Fix Crater / Fish Eye and Orange Peel on Gloss Wood Finish?

In daily furniture and musical instrument finishing, four surface defects often affect the final gloss and yield rate: crater, fish eye (oil leakage), blooming, and orange peel. These issues are mainly caused by surface contamination, improper spraying settings, humid weather, and incorrect solvent selection.

Understanding the causes and quick fixes helps factories reduce rework, improve finishing smoothness, and keep consistent high-gloss wood coating quality.

Crater / Fish Eye (Oil Leakage)

-Small round pits, shrink holes, or oil spots on the clear coating surface. The paint cannot wet the wood evenly.

Cause:

  • Wood surface, tools, or spray room contains oil, wax, or silicone contamination.
  • Compressed air carries water and oil
  • Used a contaminated rag for wiping or polluted thinner.

Preventive Measures:

► Fully clean wood surface before spraying to remove wax, grease, and dust.
► Drain and filter the air compressor regularly to avoid oil and water mixing.
► Keep the spray booth clean and use qualified, uncontaminated solvents.

► Ensure adequate ventilation and exhaust within the coating area to minimize the risk of air pollution.
► Sand defective areas completely and re-spray for finished products.

Orange Peel

-The coating surface looks rough and textured like orange peel, without smooth mirror gloss.

Cause:

  • Paint viscosity too high or one-time spraying volume too heavy
  • Fast-evaporating thinner used in unsuitable weather.
  • Incorrect spray distance, unstable air pressure, or fast drying speed.
  • Poor paint leveling performance.

Preventive Measures:

►Adjust paint viscosity properly and spray thin coats multiple times.
►Use seasonal matched thinner to slow down fast evaporation.
►Select a wood coating with excellent leveling properties to achieve a smoother coating finish.

Key Tips for Stable Finishing:

-Most surface defects can be avoided by maintaining standardized cleaning procedures, correct mixing ratios, appropriate solvent selection, and a stable workshop environment.

-Using high-quality primers and topcoats can significantly reduce common spraying issues and lower defect rates, while creating an exceptionally clear, smooth, and high-gloss finish for furniture and musical instruments.
